Ways to Participate!
Contribute to community science projects that are part of Project RattleCam

Have you ever wondered how rattlesnakes communicate with each other or noticed a strange head twitching motion while watching the RattleCam? We are researching this behavior! Head twitching between rattlesnakes has been understudied and could be their “secret language”. Project RattleCam captures these amazing interactions through the livestreams, which will allow us to research their communication with minimal disturbances, allowing us to decode their interactions. Watch this video to learn more about the project!
Want to help us decode snake communication? While watching Project RattleCam, type “twitching” with the livestream’s timestamp in the live-chat every time you see a rattlesnake twitch! This will help us locate these interactions which will later be analyzed by our scientists.
Want to join our cause? If you are interested in learning more about snakes or are looking for research experience, the RattleResearchers team is what you're looking for. On your own schedule, you’ll independently collect data on snake interactions and meet with the team on Zoom every other week. Please fill out this Google Form if you’d like to get involved!
Help us study head twitch communication!

Name a Snake!
Submit an entry to our community science contest and name one of the snakes at the den. This helps researchers track snake behaviors by identifying individuals. Each snake has a unique pattern like a human fingerprint. Describe the snake's identifying features and submit three screenshots on different days of the same snake (with visible timestamps). We'll mail you a sticker and an adoption certificate, plus you'll earn major Snake Cred! See the named snakes for inspiration.
Observe!
Submit observations for the Colorado RattleCam. We are especially interested in interactions between snakes, reactions to events (like rain), and other animal species that may appear on camera.
